About the BHA

The Belize History Association (BHA) established in 2014 is a non-profit organization which aims to spearhead, conduct, and promote research on Belize’s history. The association is comprised of members from the general public including students, teachers, tour-guides, writers, publishers, and history enthusiasts.

The first planning session for the formation of the BHA was held on December 17th, 2013. At the meeting, about forty persons attended and discussed with great interest the necessary work that was ahead to establish the organization.

On January 25th, 2014, members from the general public were once again convened at the George Price Center for Peace and Development where they nominated and elected the Executive Board of the organization. The elected members of the executive were Mr. Francis Humphreys as Chair; Mr. Gian Vasquez as Vice Chair; Ms. Myrna Manzanares as Senior Member; Mr. Fred Hunter Sr. as Senior Member; and Ms. Ifasina Efunyemi as Junior Member.

The ex-officio members nominated were Mr. Nigel Encalada as a representative of the Institute for Social and Cultural Research/National Institute of Culture and History; Dr. Herman Byrd as a representative of the Belize Archives and Records Service; Ms. Tanya Hulse as a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and Mrs. Brenda Armstrong as a representative of the Ministry of Education.

The BHA has since then organized and participated in public lectures, conferences, and media campaigns to promote the history of Belize. The overarching goal is to produce A General History of Belize and to remain at the forefront of initiatives to conduct and promote Belize’s history. Towards accomplishing this goal, the BHA will organize workshops, trainings, and public activities to equip and execute activities leading to promotion of Belize’s history.

We invite you to be a part of the BHA today!
